Thank a Farmer
Long-time market customer John Vizcarrondo (John V!) submitted this lovely note of appreciation for our hardworking farmers who bring us outstanding produce, meats, eggs and so much more week after week. We couldn’t agree more!
A Farmers Market 4th of July
It has probably happened before, but I don’t recall a Farmers Market falling on the 4th of July, so I had to ask AI, and the answer came back that in the last 20 years the 4 th of July has fallen on a Saturday 4 times. That’s few enough to challenge my feeble memory.
Thinking about the meaning of July 4th led me to think about one of the things I’m most grateful for in this country: the farmers that bring their product to the Worthington Farmers Market week after week.
These folks work hard! I make it a point to talk to farmers and find out how they do what they do. Inevitably, I am left with a sense of deep gratitude and admiration for their work. I’ve heard so many stories from them:
Getting up at 3 in the morning to monitor a cow while calving
How difficult and near impossible it is to take days off
How plants need to be cared for in extreme heat or rough weather
Eggs don’t collect themselves, you know?
Planting seeds at scale is truly a labor of love for small farmers
And then every Saturday they show up, smiling, displaying the fruits of their labor. To me, it’s magic.
As I understand our country’s history, for most of it, nearly everyone had a hand in producing food. Many people lived close to the land. Small farms anchored communities, fed the neighborhood, cared for the land and passed farming knowledge to next generations.
Somewhere along the way that changed and we became several crucial steps removed from where the food comes from. The farmers market can serve to reconnect us to our food origins.
So, on this 4th of July, (and any other Saturday) talk to the farmers and thank them for showing up day after day to produce incredible food.

Veggie Spy & Versatile Vegan
Team Veggie Spy has concocted a cool way to celebrate the holiday! We have red, white, and blue produce that each star in a cold drink recipe perfect for this sweltering weekend. Our veggie stars are:
Red tomatoes – Many producers
White kohlrabi – 9N Farms
Blue blueberries – Blueberry Patch, Drift Hills, Raber
*Honorary mention (because how could we not): Peaches - Gillogly Orchards
The Versatile Vegan has found cocktails and alcohol-free drinks alike, perfect if you're an aspiring mixologist or just really darn thirsty. Those just-picked red tomatoes from the market are perfect for a homemade Fresh Tomato Bloody Mary! *Just skip the booze for a virgin Bloody Mary: https://www.thespruceeats.com/fresh-tomato-bloody-mary...
White kohlrabi isn’t usually the first veggie that comes to mind for cold summer beverages. But kohlrabi has a better marketing department in the UK, where they have drinks like a Kohlrabi Cucumber Quencher! It calls for cucumbers and apples, both of which are at the market: https://www.elizabethskitchendiary.co.uk/kohlrabi.../
Blue is for blueberries, and they are the star of this Blueberry Bourbon Smash! https://blueberry.org/recipes/blueberry-bourbon-smash/
*Bonus, peaches are perfect for Peach Lemonade! And you can upgrade that to a grown-up beverage by adding 1½ ounces of vodka, gin, or white rum per serving. https://www.southernliving.com/peach-lemonade-7377508
Cheers, and Happy Fourth of July!
