Veggie Spy

Are those green garlicky shoots from garlic bulbs called “scapes” because the great garlic flavor and cool curly shape make any meal an “escape” from the humdrum?  No, but they are still amazing! Garlic scapes are just one of many of the delicious and nutritious produce choices at the market. Escape into fun, local, and yummy at the market on Saturday morning!

Some highlights:

Black raspberries - Franklinton (limited supply, they may run out quickly!)

Collard Greens – 9N

Garlic Scapes – many producers

Batavian (aka French)  lettuce – Oakleaf is back with many of their fan faves, like this slightly sweet tender lettuce variety. And they’ll also have English peas!

The Versatile Vegan says the bold garlicky flavor of garlic scapes is ideal for pesto, like this Vegan Garlic Scape Pesto! A creative use for collard greens is Vegan Collard Green Carbonara, which works well with kale as well.   Coconut milk and black raspberries are combined in this great  Dairy Free Black Raspberry Ice Cream.
